Iran Cautions Strike on Kharg Island Oil Facilities
Alireza Tangsiri, commander of the naval forces of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), made the remarks in a message posted on the social media platform X. According to reports, he suggested that striking the island’s facilities would dramatically reshape the dynamics of international oil pricing.
“You tested Iran once with the Strait of Hormuz,” he said.
“If the smart control of the strait sketched a new index for oil prices, an attack on Kharg will create another dangerous and unprecedented equation for global energy rates and distribution.”
According to reports, the comments came after US President Donald Trump said on Friday that American forces had destroyed all military targets on Kharg Island. He also warned that the island’s oil infrastructure could be targeted if Iran continues blocking vessels in the Strait of Hormuz.
Kharg Island serves as Iran’s primary crude export center, accounting for roughly 90% to 95% of the country’s oil shipments abroad. Reports indicate that during 2025 the facility managed between 1.54 million and 1.7 million barrels of oil exports per day on average.
The island is considered a crucial element of Iran’s energy sector and a major source of state income.
According to reports, Iran has effectively shut down the Strait of Hormuz since March 1 following the launch of coordinated attacks by the United States and Israel on Feb. 28. The conflict has reportedly left around 1,300 people dead, including the country’s then-Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, and tensions have continued to escalate.
Reports say Iran has responded with drone and missile strikes aimed at Israel as well as Jordan, Iraq and several Gulf countries, stating that the attacks target US military assets. The escalation has caused casualties, damaged portions of civilian infrastructure and disrupted global markets and aviation activity.
